Kita stood on the beach outside the town of Tongue, the capital and largest village on the Arconian archipelago. Lining the beach were soldiers from the Black Watch, Deathâs Brigade, the Black Legion, and dignitaries from The Forges. In the water, four large rafts carried the bodies of the one hundred and thirty-two Black Watch soldiers killed in taking LCOM.
In the distance, a piper played, her haunting melody carrying over the sand and surf. The honor guard waded into the water and pushed the rafts through the waves into the current. Kita and eleven other soldiers lit arrows in a brazier. Forming a line, Kita gave the command to fire. The flaming arrows arced through the air and landed on the rafts, igniting the fuel. The flames engulfed the rafts, carrying the fallen soldiers to the Crushing Depths.
Kita handed her bow to a soldier and walked to her command. She glided upward as fire crawled up her wings.
âOne hundred and thirty-two brave soldiers have earned their place in the Crushing Depths. Their courage and sacrifice will be remembered by all. The glory and honor they brought upon themselves, their unit, and their people will never be forgotten. Your names, legacy, and honor will be forever remembered to inspire others to follow in your wake. Death is only the beginning. Untold glory and honor await us in the Crushing Depthâs final battle. One hundred and thirty-two soldiers are on their way to join the thousands waiting for me to call them to battle. And when that battle comes, we will show our enemies no mercy. We will drive them before us. The battle will be ours. With victory will come honor and glory!â
Kita thrust her fist into the air.
Her units mimicked the gesture and boomed, âFor Her Glory.â
âHonor and glory are ours!â Kita yelled back.
Kita went to each unit and thanked them.
When she reached the Black Watch, she returned McCoyâs salute. From her belt, Kita pulled a streamer and presented it to McCoy. âFor a job well done, Colonel.â
âWe thank Her Glory. It was an honor to serve.â
âYouâve earned great glory and honor. You and your soldiers should be proud.â
Kita stepped back as McCoy fastened the streamer to the unit colors. When he returned to his position, Kita saluted the colors, turned, and glided to the next formation. When she finished, she dismissed her units and glided to where Megan, Zidin, and Tina waited.
âCanât say I agree with this,â said Megan with a frown. âTheyâre Arconians, and you didnât invite the leadership. Itâs Tradition for the chieftains to see them off.â
âIâm their chieftain,â replied Kita. âThey pledged their loyalty to me, and Iâm loyal to them.â
âAre you not becoming like your father?â said Zidin.
âMy father saw his people as surfs that should obey him without question. He didnât care if they were loyal as long as they obeyed. The most important distinction between us is: people had no choice but to be ruled by my father. My people chose me and are free to leave.
